The M67 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J3 and J4.
A Greater Manchester Police-led incident forced the M67 closure; National Highways contractors deployed to manage traffic.
The A628 Woodhead Pass also remains shut in both directions between Hollingworth and the A616 Flouch roundabout, following a serious road traffic collision.
Diversion routes are in place for eastbound traffic, directing motorists onto the A57 or M62 between Greater Manchester and Yorkshire.
While investigations continue, the M67 will be closed in both directions for majority of the day.
A GMP Tameside spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, "While investigations continue, the M67 will be closed in both directions for majority of the day."
The spokesperson added, "Please find an alternate route and we are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause. Thank you for your cooperation."
National Highways projects the M67 will remain shut all day due to the incident's nature; further details regarding the incidents on both the M67 and the A628 have yet to emerge.
National Highways also expects the A628 road to remain closed throughout the night, with no current timescales for its reopening available.
