Miliband Heads to Washington Amidst Trump Tensions
Former Foreign Secretary's US visit for Gaza, Iran, and Ukraine talks shadowed by past criticisms of former President Trump.

Ed Miliband is traveling to Washington for a meeting with Marco Rubio.
Before departing London, Miliband stated the talks would focus on “ongoing work to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and secure a lasting ceasefire.” He affirmed this work is “essential to ease cost-of-living pressures on British families.”

During his visit, Miliband will also meet World Bank president Ajay Banga. The government remains committed to nurturing its strong, enduring, and essential alliance with the US, Miliband stated.
This trip unfolds against a backdrop of past friction with Donald Trump, who previously criticised the UK government's stance on fossil fuels. Mr Burnham has signalled a shift in energy policy since arriving in Downing Street.

Some in Trump’s Maga universe undoubtedly see Miliband as a far-left bogeyman, someone who needs to be put in their place. This view may indeed be Trump’s own.
The Trump administration claims Miliband was not the US President’s choice to lead the Foreign Office under Prime Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Vice President JD Vance was similarly misinformed when he once called Trump a “cynical asshole,” “reprehensible,” and, in a leaked conversation, compared him to Adolf Hitler.

Trump has seemingly forgiven Vance. It is unlikely he has done the same for Miliband.
Despite these tensions, EY predicts UK inflation will reach 6.4 per cent by the end of the year unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. The two are understood to have discussed the importance of Europe taking on a greater role in its own security.
They also reiterated their shared commitment to safe transit in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring Iran never develops or obtains a nuclear weapon.
