Early Sugar Restriction Linked to Reduced Dementia Risk

UK Biobank study connects 1940s rationing to long-term brain health benefits, revealing a 23 per cent lower risk.

A comprehensive study has revealed a significant link between early-life sugar intake and the long-term risk of developing dementia, drawing insights from historical British sugar rationing.
Researchers from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology compared 64,737 individuals born before and after the World War II sugar rationing in the UK.
The team analyzed medical records, starting when participants reached an average age of 55, to identify dementia diagnoses over the subsequent 15 years.
This study, published in the journal Neurology, meticulously analyzed data from these 64,737 UK Biobank participants.
Brain imaging of a subset of participants revealed those with lower early-life sugar exposure possessed greater total grey matter volume and fewer white matter hyperintensities.
These findings suggest limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may offer lasting benefits for brain health, Jiazhen Zheng, a lead researcher, confirmed.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, China, conducted this research, providing a global perspective on a distinctly British historical event.
The British Government imposed sugar rationing in 1940, maintaining it until 1953, creating a unique historical cohort for the study.
Toddlers during this rationing period showed a 23 percent lower risk of dementia.
Beyond historical context, the study also suggests pregnant women who avoid sweets, chocolates, and other sugary foods can help slash their child's risk of the memory-robbing disease by 20 percent.
Jiazhen Zheng claimed these results highlight the potential importance of early-life nutrition in reducing dementia risk decades later.
However, the researchers also claim the findings do not conclusively prove eating less sugar directly prevents dementia.
Dr. Sara Rodrigues cautioned that this observational study identifies links but cannot prove direct causation.
Current guidelines state children aged one should consume no more than 10g of free sugars daily.
Despite these guidelines, an investigation claims parents in England's fattest region received advice to wean their babies onto solid foods with biscuits, crisps, and chocolate.

Jiazhen Zheng stated that limiting added sugars during pregnancy and infancy may represent one beneficial step families and communities can take, but further research remains necessary.
