Three members of the same family have died after being pulled from the water in Shoreham-by-Sea.
A younger girl from the same family remains in critical condition in hospital; a fourth person pulled from the water is also reportedly in a critical state.
Fishermen observed a young girl, a boy, a man, and a woman struggling against the powerful currents.
The RNLI deployed lifeboat crews around 2:50pm; two additional lifeboats launched from Brighton shortly after 3pm.
Sussex Police believe the family entered the water from land for a swim, then faced immediate peril, as Ch Supt James Collis stated.
Three individuals, identified as a man, a woman, and a teenage girl, were confirmed deceased.
Coastguards have completed an extensive search and are not actively seeking anyone else.
Shoreham Port collaborates with multiple agencies and urged the public to avoid the area during ongoing operations.
The A259 Brighton Road was blocked in both directions following the incident.
