A shark, estimated to be between 10ft and 13ft long, was spotted near Nazar, Portugal, igniting debate over its species.
Nuno Santos identified a "white ventral area suggesting that it could be a great white shark," providing a key detail for species identification.
Ocean Adventures, however, stated, "We can't identify the species, so we're leaving some videos here for marine biologists to give an opinion," despite also claiming the shark measured between 10ft and 13ft and was thought possibly to be a great white.
We can't identify the species, so we're leaving some videos here for marine biologists to give an opinion.
Historically, great white sharks, known as highly migratory apex predators, occasionally surface in the Mediterranean and wider North Atlantic.
This established migratory pattern confirms their presence in Portuguese waters, while uncommon, is not entirely unprecedented.
The shark reportedly approached the boat, swimming around it; Ocean Adventures claimed the animal showed calm behavior and even curiosity, stating, "To mention that at no point did we feel threatened, and that the animal showed calm behavior and even curiosity."
However, an anonymous Instagram user offered a contrasting account, claiming, "For days I was diving and I found it, it was devouring a small seal," asserting the shark "didn't even look at me" from less than 10 meters away.
Another anonymous Instagram user definitively stated, "White shark, this dorsal fin doesn't fool..." indicating a strong belief in the species' identity.
Skepticism emerged from a different user who questioned, "White shark in these waters?? I doubt it!"
These conflicting claims from the public and the cautious stance from Ocean Adventures complicate definitive identification from visual evidence alone.
Marine biologists now analyze the footage, tasked with providing a conclusive identification, navigating the various public and anecdotal claims.
The sighting has brought significant attention to the waters off Nazaré, prompting further discussion among stakeholders about marine conservation and public awareness.
This incident fuels public fascination and concern regarding marine wildlife, particularly large predators, in coastal waters.
