His death is being investigated as a suspected overdose, police said. This follows reports that he died of a suspected overdose after going into cardiac arrest.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner lists Gerber's case as pending additional investigation. The Santa Monica Police Department has stated there is no indication foul play was involved.
Gerber had openly discussed his struggles with depression and substance abuse. In March, he posted a video of himself using Ibogaine for drug withdrawal treatment in Cancun, Mexico.
He reportedly checked into Resolutions Living the day before he was found dead. A clip taken around 10pm the night before his death reportedly showed him visibly under the influence.
His sister, Kaia Gerber, shared a personal tribute to her brother on Instagram. She is understood to be struggling with his death.
