Kellogg's has removed rice from its popular Rice Krispies and Coco Pops cereals.
Rice Krispies and Coco Pops now contain barley. This allergen was previously absent. Both cereals carry prominent labeling, alerting consumers to the change in allergen information.
Kellogg's maintains the cereals remain non-HFSS. They retain previous nutritional levels of fiber, Vitamin D, and iron. The company claims the recipe changes stem from 'changing weather conditions' negatively impacting the quality and cost of the ingredient.
The updated recipes have been carefully assessed for taste, appearance and texture, and we are continuing to listen closely to consumer feedback.
The climate crisis has affected the quality and availability of some rice and grains used in its most popular cereals. A Kellogg's spokesperson confirmed the company carefully assessed the updated recipes, stating: 'The updated recipes have been carefully assessed for taste, appearance and texture, and we are continuing to listen closely to consumer feedback.'
The reformulation comes as sales of Rice Krispies decline. Both value and volume are down, according to a forthcoming Top Products Survey 2026. This follows a broader company trend; Kellogg's in the US announced it would stop using artificial dyes in its breakfast cereals by the end of 2027.
