Homicide Squad Investigates Footballer's Death After On-Pitch Collision

The investigation, standard for any death not resulting from natural causes, now probes the medical response. Police are examining whether oxygen was administered and if a defibrillator was used on the pitch.

Match officials abandoned the fixture following the incident. Tenerife announced six days of official mourning. The Spanish Football Federation postponed Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa del Reina matches.

A minute’s silence was observed before all Champions League fixtures on Tuesday night. Further silences will take place before all other Uefa fixtures this week.

Mourners laid flowers and lit candles at Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The entire CD Tenerife squad will travel to Navahermosa, the hometown of de Miguel's parents, to pay their last respects.

Flags outside the town hall in Navahermosa flew at half mast. De Miguel's body is expected to be flown to the Spanish mainland for his funeral in Navahermosa.

Tenerife will open their home ground on Saturday evening for supporters to bid farewell to the player. He signed a three-year contract with the club last summer.

FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono is suffering following de Miguel's death. Lautaro Spatz claims Owono was deeply affected and would never intentionally hurt anyone.

Spatz added that unfortunate incidents can happen in football. No one could imagine such tragic consequences. New footage shows Owono had made his way to the other end of the pitch to get involved in a confrontation following a red card. He then appeared to motion for an opposing goalkeeper to leave the field.

Owono intends to apologise directly to de Miguel's family for his challenge. He has since received racist abuse on social media, leading to the deactivation of his Instagram account.
