Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old Tenerife footballer, died today following a cardiac arrest.
De Miguel collapsed on the pitch after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second division match on Monday. The score stood at 2-2 at the time.
Medics transported him to Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz. His neurological condition worsened in the early hours of Tuesday; De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest during transport and required revival in the ambulance.
CD Tenerife initially stated De Miguel was stable despite the severity of his condition. The club later confirmed his medical condition had worsened neurologically.
Spanish police opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the player's death. Life-threatening injuries from collisions in football remain extremely rare.
Owono, an Equatorial Guinea international with 44 caps, is deeply affected by the situation. He intends to apologize privately before making any public statements, Ivan Alvarez confirmed.
Owono came through Real Sociedad's youth academy and joined Alaves at 16, playing 11 LaLiga matches before moving to Andorra. Former Barcelona star Gerard Pique owns the club.
UEFA will hold a minute of silence at all matches this week in tribute. The Royal Spanish Football Federation cancelled all domestic matches scheduled for today, and also announced the postponement of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa del Reina matches.
Barcelona and Real Madrid expressed their condolences. De Miguel previously helped secure promotions for Internacional de Madrid and CD Castellón; the latter also paid tribute to their former player.
