Global Ocean Temperatures Hit Record High Amidst Strengthening El Niño

Average surface temperature outside polar regions reached 21.1C on Saturday, surpassing previous records as scientists warn of a potentially historic El Niño event.

The planet's seas outside the polar regions reached an average surface temperature of 21.1C (70F) on Saturday.
Dr. Samantha Burgess of the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) produced the new data, which covers oceans outside the polar regions.
This data, stretching back to 1979, relies on sea temperatures 10m (32ft 10in) below the surface, utilizing measurements from buoys, ships, and satellites.
Oceans absorb over 90% of the excess heat trapped by humanity's greenhouse gas emissions. This long-term trend now faces exacerbation by natural climate cycles.
El Niño, a naturally occurring climate cycle, brings unusually warm waters to the surface of the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean.
