Michael Carrick is set for a 'stay of execution' at Manchester United despite a dismal run of form.
The decision to retain Carrick follows a dismal run of form: six defeats and only two victories across 12 games. This poor performance culminated in consecutive three-goal margin losses, intensifying pressure on the club.
Bruno Fernandes openly criticised Carrick's tactics after a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. This public rebuke highlighted growing dissent within the squad.
Manchester United's hierarchy considered replacing Carrick. Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were under review. Gary Neville stated, "I reckon what's happened in the 24 hours after Bournemouth is that they've literally debated it back and forth."
Neville added, "I don't know this, but they've debated it to the point where they've got themselves into a muddle, and thought, 'we'll just stay with him'." The club's persistence with Carrick stems from a lack of planning, limited available options, and indecisive action regarding potential successors.
Jamie Carragher claimed Manchester United players know Carrick will not remain in charge for more than two or three weeks. Neville suggested Fernandes's actions signal a lack of respect and faith in Carrick's tactical approach from his teammates.
Clear-the-air talks occurred between Carrick and Fernandes. Despite the team's struggles, Manchester United fans cheered Carrick as he left the pitch after the Bournemouth defeat, then booed their own players.
The club carries a substantial £1.2bn of debt. Gary Neville highlighted this, stating, "There's £1.2bn of debt in that football club, they're hamstrung in some ways."
The Glazer family, Manchester United's owners, reside in Tampa, America. Neville claimed the Glazers have hardly visited Old Trafford in over 20 years. They are reportedly popular in Tampa and attend every NFL game.
Neville urged the Glazer family to sell the club. He asserted, "My point is, they have to sell now, enough is enough, the club is in debt, you’ve not spent a penny on the stadium, you’re now trying to borrow £2bn for a stadium you don’t know how you’ll how the hell you’ll borrow."
