Michael Carrick is set to be named Manchester United's interim manager.
Manchester United have struggled recently, winning only one of their last seven matches, including an FA Cup third-round defeat at the hands of Brighton on Sunday.
The team's poor form has forced a re-evaluation of the interim manager shortlist, with Michael Carrick now emerging as the preferred choice.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are overseeing the selection process.
Sources claim Carrick interviewed well for the role and is now the clear frontrunner.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was previously the leading candidate for the interim role, but senior players reportedly expressed a lack of confidence in his return.
Some players allegedly told club bosses they did not want Solskjaer back, forcing the board to pivot to other options.
Wayne Rooney believes Carrick is a perfect fit, citing his tactical experience and deep knowledge of the club.
Carrick previously served a three-game stint as interim boss following Solskjaer's 2021 dismissal, securing a Champions League victory in Villarreal, a home win against Arsenal, and a draw with Chelsea.
Carrick also guided Middlesbrough to the Championship play-offs in the 2022-23 campaign and famously declined the chance to coach alongside Ralf Rangnick in 2021.
Carrick wants Jonathan Woodgate to join his coaching staff, though it remains unclear if United will agree to hire Woodgate on a short-term contract.
The search for an interim follows the sacking of Ruben Amorim last week.
United also remain interested in Unai Emery for the permanent position, having made contact with Aston Villa prior to Amorim's initial appointment.
Sources say Emery is a manager who demands complete control over football operations.
Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves has emerged as a primary transfer target, with the club expected to provide Carrick with funds for the January window.
In a roster move, Manchester United recalled Ethan Wheatley from his loan spell at Northampton Town amid significant interest from rival clubs.
Phil Jones noted the atmosphere has been difficult for months, highlighting the urgent need for a management shift.
Luis Enrique is also in the frame; the PSG boss recently revealed 'talks' regarding his future.
Sources claim Enrique declined a new contract in Paris, feeling he has reached his peak with the French champions.
Solskjaer managed the club from 2018 to 2021, winning 54 per cent of his 168 games in charge.
While Solskjaer reportedly wants another chance at the permanent job, his prospects appear slim.
Manchester United fans remain disillusioned with the club's decision-making, with many expressing their discontent across social media.
