A wildfire has been burning for over three weeks on the hillside above Blaenavon, south Wales.
The fire has now spread across 4,000 hectares, equivalent to 9,800 acres, placing significant strain on resources. Extreme heat and a lack of rain have contributed to what is understood to be a record-breaking summer for wildfires across the UK.
Four 14-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with a fire near Pleasant Heights in Porth; they have been bailed under investigation. The cause of the Blaenavon fire, however, remains unknown, according to the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
Emergency services are utilizing thermal camera drones and specialized response vehicles in their efforts. The armed forces provide crucial logistical, operational, and planning support.
This support includes transporting water from distant sources to create mobile water reservoirs in key locations and moving equipment to fire sites. The Welsh water system is under pressure, reportedly requiring military assistance for water distribution to fire sites.
The combined efforts of emergency services and the military have reportedly saved houses in Blaenavon, preventing further devastation. Residents were evacuated from their homes in Torfaen, Porth, Merthyr Tydfil, and Llandovery as the fires intensified.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service received 736 calls on Saturday, a significant increase compared to their average of 300 calls. Fin Monahan stated that not every investigation has been completed yet, but it is already clear that wildfires have been a significant issue this year in south Wales.
Fire chiefs warn that while temperatures may ease in the coming days, a continued lack of rain means the wildfire risk remains high. Elin Jones confirmed that the Welsh Government was prepared to fund the military assistance operations if necessary.
