Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Canadian goods, including a 50 percent increase on cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel.
The US implements these tariffs under a provision within the Tariff Act of 1930, which permits duties up to 50% on imports from countries discriminating against American commerce.

This aggressive stance emerges despite significant economic interdependence between the two countries; the US and Canada exchanged $872 billion worth of goods and services in 2025.
Canadian Prime Prime Minister Mark Carney has signaled that Canada could retaliate by cutting off critical energy supplies to the U.S.
These announcements are understood to be reminders that the Trump administration remains wholly uninterested in addressing the cost of living.
While polls indicate voters care immensely about affordability, Trump has reportedly done little to address it, causing headaches for Republicans attempting to convince voters to support the GOP.
The generic ballot, which measures voter preference for Congress, reportedly shows Democrats holding a five- to eight-point lead against Republicans.
With a slim Republican majority in Congress, Democrats have a strong chance of regaining control of both the House and Senate.
President Trump is also reportedly struggling with Hispanic voters, a demographic that previously supported him significantly, even in historically non-Republican areas.
The problem with various candidates distancing themselves from Trump is that Congress as a whole has reportedly taken few steps to actually create daylight between lawmakers and the president.
Despite these political challenges, the president does not seem bothered by any of this, according to reports.
