Travelers anticipate higher costs and longer travel times for train journeys compared to flying, despite substantial savings. Survey respondents expected a train journey between London and Manchester to cost £88, while the actual cost stands at £45.

An estimated 93% of a rail journey can be spent working, reading, relaxing, or staying connected.
An estimated 93% of a rail journey can be spent working, reading, relaxing, or staying connected, according to a Rail Delivery Group report. This contrasts sharply with domestic flights, where only 33% of the journey time remains usable after checking in, security, and boarding procedures conclude.
Jacqueline Starr, CEO of the Rail Delivery Group, confirmed this research highlights the benefits rail offers passengers, including lower costs and reduced carbon emissions. She added that frequent services connecting cities across Britain make rail a convenient, flexible, and attractive travel option.
The Government has also launched its Great British Summer Savings scheme, introducing a temporary VAT reduction on eligible family attractions and days out. This initiative could further encourage domestic exploration, aligning with the broader appeal of local travel.
Andrew Stokes, England Director at VisitEngland, highlighted the unique appeal of visiting national and regional treasures by train, describing it as a special experience. He noted that travelling by rail offers an easy, efficient, and environmentally friendly way to explore more and enjoy spectacular scenery, whether for a cultural city break, a 'set jetting' stay, or a trip to picturesque coastal or rural destinations.
