Ugandan Footballer David Owori Beaten to Death in Kampala

Attackers left Owori unconscious, using paving stones after he resisted an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.

The fatal assault occurred near his home in Makindye, a Kampala suburb; Asan Kasingye confirmed the player was ambushed by thugs.

Kasingye stated, "The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility."

Owori later died from his injuries at a nearby clinic, having been struck with paving stones during the attack, witnesses confirmed.

He was a pivotal figure for SC Villa, playing a key role in their 2024 victory for the 17th Uganda Premier League title, ending a 20-year championship drought.

Owori also played for The Cranes during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying stages and previously played in Europe for Spanish side Vélez CF and Swedish side Utsiktens BK.

Police detectives are actively working to identify the perpetrators; Rachael Kawala confirmed detectives are pursuing leads.

Kawala stated, "The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved."

Uganda's parliament observed a minute of silence, calling for a swift investigation into Owori's death.

The Federation of Uganda Football Association mourned Owori's loss, stating, "David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation."

SC Villa also expressed their grief, with the club stating, "Our hearts are broken."

The club added, "SC Villa mourns the tragic passing of our beloved captain, David Owori, following a brutal attack. We have lost more than a player—we have lost a leader, brother and friend. Our deepest prayers are with his family. Rest well, Captain."

The Cranes acknowledged Owori's impact.
