Sir Keir Starmer called for closer European cooperation on defence and security.
He asserted the UK and other European nations must draw closer. "Europe has twice been caught asleep – failing to anticipate and prepare for predictable events," Starmer declared.
Starmer elaborated on this critical failure: "First when Russia's attack on Ukraine exposed long-standing European weaknesses on defence and security; and second when President Trump made clear, once and for all, that the US will no longer bankroll our European security. We have to catch up."
This shift, Starmer claims, represents a permanent change. "I will say here what I have said to European leaders. This is about responding to a permanent change of affairs, not an aberration of the Trump presidency. Things will not go back to the way they were before," he stated.
America has made it clear it will no longer bankroll allies on the continent; "things will not go back to the way they were," Starmer added.
The Labour leader emphasized the urgent need to build pan-European cooperation and coordination on defence and security. "We need to build up pan-European co-operation and co-ordination on defence and security – a common security framework as much as a common market," he declared.

A stronger Europe is vital and the UK must be at the heart of it.

Europe needs a common security framework as much as a common market, with the UK at its centre. "A stronger Europe is vital and the UK must be at the heart of it," Starmer asserted.
Ireland and the UK currently work with Ukraine to guarantee and shape the continent's security. Andy Burnham reportedly intends to be bolder about closer ties with the EU.
President Trump later criticized Starmer, stating he was 'no Winston Churchill'. However, Starmer maintains his comments do not diminish the US relationship, asserting the UK-USA military, security, and intelligence alliance is far too strong to be negatively impacted.
