Plug-in solar panels are now available for purchase across the UK, marking a significant shift in domestic energy options.
Testing confirms plug-in solar panels are safe and compatible with UK domestic electrical systems, Martin McCluskey stated. Each kit generates up to 800W, plugging directly into a home's electrical system via an ordinary plug.

Government modeling indicates an 800W system could save households approximately £70 to £110 annually, with Desnz claiming savings reaching £110. Ofgem's energy price cap has risen to £1,723 per year, an increase of around £60 for households.
Retailers including Argos, Amazon, Currys, B&Q, Screwfix, and Wickes will reportedly sell the technology. Argos confirmed sales commenced Thursday, with Amazon expected to follow.
Currys, B&Q, Screwfix, and Wickes are also committed to stocking plug-in panels, ensuring widespread accessibility for the technology.
Households may require consent from landlords, building owners, or councils before installation, and officials claim many plug-in solar devices will necessitate such approval. Purchased kits also demand registration with grid operators; current G98 rules limit households to one plug-in solar device.
Consumer advice on installations will be published through the Energy Saving Trust, with Joanna O’Loan emphasizing, "As these products become more widely available, access to clear and reliable information is essential to help people make informed choices that are right for their home and budget."
In England, planning rules are changing from August 27, 2026, to include plug-in solar within permitted development rights. European balcony solar kits are not automatically compliant for use in the UK.
