William Chapman died Saturday after a tiger attacked him inside its enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed the man, visiting the park alone, was pronounced dead at the scene; the incident occurred around 1:35 PM.
Emergency services responded as zookeepers attempted to scare the tiger away using acoustic gun blasts.
The City of Doncaster Council initiated a health and safety investigation into the incident, with the wildlife park remaining closed for a fourth day on Tuesday.
Dan Swaine, speaking for the council, stated, "As the relevant licensing authority for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, I can confirm that, in line with our statutory duties, the council has launched a health and safety investigation."
Swaine added the council is "working with multiple agencies, including the police and health agencies, and are supporting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in response to the incident."
The park apologised to ticket holders for the closure; the tiger, Altai, will not be euthanised.
Eyewitnesses claim the man wore headphones and paced near the enclosure before entering; other accounts suggest he danced with headphones on before approaching visitors to ask for pictures.
Witnesses also said he overpowered a woman who desperately tried to stop him entering the compound; reports indicate he screamed 'stop' several times and appeared to make a gesture for 'bad' in Makaton when the tiger attacked.
Parkgoers claim the tiger pawed at and toyed with the man before jumping onto his neck.
Videos of onlookers urging the man not to approach the tiger and to 'play dead' were shared online, alongside AI-generated fakes.
Police confirm specialist officers support the man's family; a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson reiterated the man was not accompanied by anybody.
The Born Free Foundation called for an urgent review of the incident.
Dan Swaine concluded, "At this time, we won’t be commenting further on the individual or the investigation and we ask that the privacy of those involved is respected at this difficult time."
