Two protesters were fatally shot by federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, leading to the removal of Gregory Bovino from his national role and sparking intense controversy.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed that Alex Pretti approached officers aggressively while armed with a handgun. An anonymous source present at the scene disputed this, stating that Pretti 'never at any time produced a gun'.
Beyond the conflicting accounts, the Minnesota Department of Corrections has established a dedicated website to counter claims made by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The site highlights discrepancies in DHS's data regarding ICE detainers.
Commissioner Paul Schnell clarified that the DOC conducted its own survey of county jails across the state. This audit revealed only 94 people with ICE detainers, contrary to DHS's assertion of over 1,360.
Schnell invited DHS to address specific cases if they believed there were failures to honor ICE detainers. The DOC has also released statements clarifying the criminal histories of individuals referenced by federal officials.
This situation is further complicated by U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow's history of presiding over high-profile cases. She previously sentenced Jon Burge, a notorious Chicago police commander associated with allegations of torture.
Judge Lefkow is currently presiding over the trial of a man accused in a murder plot against U.S. Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino. She has previously warned about threats to the judiciary following the killing of her family members in 2005.
On the ground, an ICE official suggested that Secretary Noem's public rhetoric has exacerbated tensions in Minneapolis. A source close to the White House described Noem's decision to sideline Homan as a 'huge mistake'.
A Republican lawmaker commented that the public imagery of the federal operation was 'not playing well'. Meanwhile, U.S. Border Patrol leadership contended that local agencies were not cooperating sufficiently with federal efforts.
The Department of Homeland Security alleged that individuals with active deportation orders were being routinely released by local authorities. However, Gregory Bovino previously claimed that Democrats and journalists were being blamed for unrest occurring in Minneapolis.
President Donald Trump reportedly held a 'very good' telephone conversation with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey regarding the situation. Some federal agents involved in the operation are expected to begin withdrawing from the area starting Tuesday.
The operation, officially designated as Operation Metro Surge, has faced calls for its termination following a pattern of escalating violence. This violence resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens, including Renee Good, who was killed in a separate incident earlier this month.
