UK Homes Unprepared for Escalating Heatwaves, Cooling Solutions Lagging
Only 5% of English homes have cooling units as policy fails to address rising temperatures and vulnerable populations.

English homes remain largely unequipped for rising temperatures, with only about 5% currently possessing a cooling unit, exposing a critical gap in climate adaptation strategies.
Inadequate cooling infrastructure poses immediate health risks, particularly for vulnerable residents like Mandy Bourne. She struggles with health conditions exacerbated by heatwaves in her top-floor social housing flat in the West Midlands, shared with her 80-year-old mother.

The energy demands associated with cooling also present a complex challenge. The UK briefly restarted a coal power plant in both 2022 and 2023 to meet surging energy demand, partly attributed to increased air conditioning use.
Passive cooling methods, common in other European nations, offer a less energy-intensive alternative. Window shutters, for instance, are widely used in Rome and significantly reduce the need for mechanical cooling.
Professor Mat Santamouris claims passive cooling also stimulates economic growth, necessitating spending on plumbers and builders. This offers both environmental and economic benefits.
