The UK government is considering a ban on social media for individuals under 16 and smartphones in schools.
A recent survey by the NASUWT teachers' union, involving 5,800 members, indicated that 81% have observed a rise in violent and abusive behavior among pupils, which they link to social media usage.
Matt Wrack, General Secretary of NASUWT, said social media companies need legislative compulsion to act responsibly, emphasizing the urgent need for a statutory ban for those under 16.
The NASUWT is also pushing for legislation to restrict children's access to major tech platforms, citing concerns over exposure to violent and sexually explicit material.
Education leaders have voiced support for a mobile phone ban on school premises. A government spokesperson affirmed that headteachers already possess the authority to implement necessary measures against disruptions.
While the government asserts it has taken significant steps to ensure age-appropriate online experiences, Kemi Badenoch characterized the internet—and social media in particular—as a 'wild west'.
Badenoch acknowledged that age restrictions alone might not entirely prevent children from accessing social media, a sentiment echoed by Andy Burnham.
Australia has reportedly pioneered a policy aimed at safeguarding children's mental health and education by limiting social media access.
However, Anna Edmundson, NSPCC head of policy and public affairs, argued that a universal ban for under-16s would be an overly simplistic solution to a multifaceted issue—a viewpoint shared by the government.
Despite acknowledging the impact of social media on children's mental well-being, the government currently does not endorse a comprehensive ban.
