Trevor Nelson, 62, has announced a brain tumour diagnosis.
Nelson announced his summer hiatus from all work commitments, citing illness.
He confirmed the discovery of a brain tumour, stating, "I was minding my own business and then it was discovered that I had a brain tumour." The news, he added, "shocked" him, turning his "world upside down."
I was minding my own business and then it was discovered that I had a brain tumour.
Nelson acknowledged the public's intense concern, noting, "There’s been a lot of speculation as to what’s wrong with me, I know that much. My phone’s blown up 20 times over with people asking what’s wrong with me."
Overwhelmed by "the love and the positive vibes, thousands of you have been sending me," Nelson felt compelled to disclose his condition.
The surgery proved successful; Nelson recuperated at home, undergoing post-operative treatment.
Clara Amfo covered Nelson's afternoon show from June 29 to July 3, with DJ Spoony taking over from July 6.
Nelson now reports feeling "great," "energised," and "almost back to myself," ready for an imminent return to work.
He plans to resume his duties at Radio 2 soon, crediting the 2026 World Cup as a distraction during his health ordeal.
Nelson's DJ career began in the 1980s on London's pirate radio station Kiss FM; he received an MBE in 2002 for his contribution to the Millennium Volunteers programme.
He concluded, "I've had a really serious situation but I've come out the other side and I feel great. I feel raring to go. I feel in good health."
