Netflix plans to lay off approximately 6% of its workforce, impacting nearly 1,000 positions.
Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos announced the job cuts in a memo to employees, stating the company needed to be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources.” They emphasized investment in future growth and “high impact areas to improve our service.”
The bulk of these job cuts are understood to impact Netflix’s product, tech, legal, and human resources teams.
Disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources.
The company, which had about 16,000 employees at the end of last year, faces increased competition from rivals and a period of consolidation within the streaming industry.
This move marks Netflix's largest round of layoffs since 2022, with the company expected to cut roughly 1,000 positions.
The streaming giant navigates a landscape where skepticism has grown over its ability to maintain the expansion that previously reshaped the U.S. media market.
This comes as Paramount completed its $110bn Warner Bros acquisition earlier this month, forming Skydance.
Despite the layoffs, Peters and Sarandos stated, "Our business is strong and growing, and we remain on track to deliver our full-year forecast."
Netflix is scheduled to report its latest financial results on October 20.
