Naga Munchetty Departs BBC Breakfast After 17 Years

Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards will step down from BBC 5Live's breakfast show in January 2025, concluding their five-year tenure together; Edwards will continue to present Fighting Talk.

The BBC Breakfast Sunday morning programme will cease broadcasting due to budget cuts, indicating wider financial pressures on the corporation.

Munchetty's move to 5 Live reportedly follows a bullying probe into her behavior, which was 'quietly dropped' in summer 2023 amid complaints regarding alleged bullying and off-color jokes spanning a three-year period.

Allegations included making sexual comments during an ad break and questioning a female colleague about a specific sex act.

Munchetty also faced accusations of reprimanding an intern over the quality of her Marmite on toast.

Further allegations claim she told Sally Nugent, 'We're meant to be serious journalists, not trying to look like we're presenting This Morning,' and described Carol Kirkwood as 'really stern,' stating Kirkwood had 'aged a bit.'

Viewers reportedly complained when Munchetty said on air, 'I'm just waiting for the countdown for you to go.'

Despite these claims, Munchetty expressed enthusiasm for her new role, stating, 'I'm thrilled to be joining 5 Live Breakfast in January.'

She added, 'Live news, great conversations and connecting with audiences are what I love most about broadcasting, and 5 Live does all of that brilliantly.'

Munchetty further commented, 'Presenting a flagship programme on 5 Live is an opportunity that was simply too good to pass up.'

She concluded, 'It will take a huge amount of work and require 100% of my focus and energy, and I’m really looking forward to throwing myself into the role.'

Jon Kay acknowledged her departure, stating, 'Our friend and colleague Naga Munchetty has announced that she will be leaving BBC Breakfast to co-present the BBC 5 Live Breakfast Show from January 2025.'
