Infantino Faces Mounting Pressure Amid World Cup Stake Sale Controversy

The reversal of the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal was hailed as 'a victory for the whole game.' Uefa stated football was 'not for sale.'

The abandoned proposal involved creating Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) to manage commercial and operational aspects of FIFA tournaments. Plans included selling off 21% of the World Cup to private investors, a move Uefa described as a 'shabby, back room, opaque deal.'

The heads of Uefa, AFC, and Concacaf issued a joint statement: 'When trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned.'

These confederations seek to offer Infantino the opportunity to resign with dignity, without seeking re-election. Uefa stated the current FIFA leadership had 'lost UEFA's confidence' and that of 'many other members of the football family.'

Senior figures from European football are gathering in Salzburg for critical meetings. The Uefa president, Aleksander Ceferin, is scheduled to hold talks with Nasser al-Khelaifi, the chair of European Football Clubs.

Member associations, including England and Wales, have begun to officially withdraw their endorsement for Infantino's re-election in 2027.

Conversely, some countries, including Mexico, Morocco, and Argentina, have backed Infantino.

Donald Trump, who awarded Infantino the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize in December 2025, has strongly defended the FIFA president.

Trump stated, 'Fifa would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing president Gianni Infantino.'

He further asserted, 'He is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented.' Trump warned, 'If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!'

Uefa confirmed a payment was made regarding allegations of a relationship between Infantino and a female employee.

Infantino also confirmed FIFA would build an academy and a stadium in Gaza.

The next FIFA presidential elections are scheduled for March, setting a clear timeline for the ongoing power struggle within the sport's highest echelons.
