Independent MP Helen Haines sustained injuries in a vehicle incident outside her Wangaratta office.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 PM on Monday. A vehicle struck Haines. Emergency services responded to the scene on Murphy Street, which remains closed to the public.
Police arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the attack. Officers seized a knife from the vehicle.
A major police investigation is underway. The Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police, and ASIO are involved. The Joint Counter Terrorism Team activated.
An attack and a deliberate act.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as an “attack” and a “deliberate act.” He stated the motive for the attack is not yet known.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is expected to speak from Sydney alongside the Prime Minister.
Haines has represented the electorate of Indi since 2019. She holds a PhD in medical science and advocates for rural issues, particularly health.
She has also been a key figure in establishing the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). Her bill for a federal integrity commission in 2021 was blocked by the Coalition government, with Bridget Archer seconding her motion.
Condemnation and expressions of shock came from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Albanese, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, Pauline Hanson, and David Shoebridge all sent messages of support.
This incident occurs amid a reported rise in threatening or harassing behaviour towards politicians in Australia. Reports increased from 951 to 1,067 in the past year.
