Labour MP Bayo Alaba has been suspended from the party.
A Labour Party spokesperson confirmed, "We cannot comment further while the investigation is ongoing." The party demands the highest standards from its elected representatives, with a spokesperson adding, "we have robust processes in place to ensure those high standards are upheld."
Mr. Alaba repays two taxpayer-funded bounceback loans, pandemic loans he secured for one of his businesses. He is currently in the process of settling these debts.
Records show attempts to wind up Alaba Properties occurred in March 2022 and August 2022. Both attempts were blocked.
Alaba Properties Ltd reportedly had a bounceback loan taken out against it. Mr. Alaba is said to have tried to wind up one of his businesses before settling one of the two loans he received during the pandemic.
The process to wind up a company can only proceed if the company has no debts. Mike Wood commented on these developments, stating, "These are concerning revelations and Alaba clearly has questions to answer."

Wood further asserted, "Alaba needs to come clean about whether he tried to avoid paying his debts, and ministers should tell us if they had to intervene to stop it. The public deserve the truth."
Mr. Alaba reportedly did not answer questions on why he attempted to wind up Alaba Properties Ltd. He also did not address whether his companies were eligible for the loans in the first first place.
Previously, Mr. Alaba ran a series of businesses in the music sector. Some of these ventures were later liquidated.
