A former Metropolitan Police officer has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault.
Tyrrell's conviction follows those of Wayne Couzens, who received a whole-life order for kidnapping, rape, and murder, and David Carrick, who serves 37 life sentences for attacking over a dozen women. All three men served in the same elite police unit.
Tyrrell resigned from the force in September 2023, following his arrest and suspension. Prosecuting lawyers claimed Tyrrell emotionally bullied and manipulated his victim to satisfy his sexual needs, ignoring her repeated refusals.
Prosecutor Catherine Farrelly KC stated that when the woman resisted Tyrrell’s sexual advances, he simply chose to take what he wanted. Tyrrell reportedly had sex with the woman after she repeatedly said no, then asked her: "Do you realize that what I’ve just done, that was rape?"

Tyrrell was found guilty of perverting the course of justice. He attempted to delete messages with the woman and persuaded her to lie to police about why he was in her bedroom.
During a police interview, the victim stated she felt pressured by him. She feared no one would believe her allegations, worrying the police would protect him because he was an officer.
Tyrrell maintained that sexual intercourse between them was always consensual. He claimed there was never any forcefulness to it.
Sara Leach commented on the verdict, stating, "This kind of conduct is abhorrent but even more so when it is carried out by a serving officer, who had gained the trust of the victim."
Leach added, We remain appalled that someone like this was serving within our organization and it is right he has been brought to justice.
