Alex Hughes Dies from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome
Inquest confirms cause for 38-year-old found at Prestbury home; family heartbroken by unexpected loss.

Alex Hughes, 38, died on June 19 at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.
Specific ion channelopathies, including Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), Brugada Syndrome, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), and progressive cardiac conduction defect (PCCD), directly link to SADS. Arrhythmias, or heart rhythm problems, afflict over 2 million people in the UK.
Many SADS victims reportedly show no signs of heart problems post-mortem. Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) asserts pathologists frequently cannot confirm a diagnosis of structural heart disease in some cases, leading to a SADS classification.

Hughes later transitioned to a performance analyst role at Blackburn during his father's tenure. He also had spells at AFC Fylde and Morecombe.
Hughes joined Grimsby in 2025. Mark Hughes noted, "Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC, and had many good friends and colleagues."
