Director and board members resign over exclusion of Palestinian author

Adelaide Writers' Week has been cancelled following a wave of resignations and author boycotts.
Louise Adler, the event's director, stepped down on Tuesday morning, citing her opposition to the silencing of a Palestinian author and the "extreme and repressive efforts of pro-Israel lobbyists." Adler’s exit underscores growing concerns about threats to free speech across the arts sector.
Four members of the festival board also resigned, triggering the ultimate cancellation of the event. The board had previously scrubbed Dr. Randa Abdel-Fattah from the programme, citing 'sensitivities' following the Bondi Beach shooting—despite no direct connection between Abdel-Fattah and the incident.
Dr. Abdel-Fattah had previously claimed that Zionists had 'no claim to cultural safety' and described institutions that prioritize the 'fragile feelings of Zionists' as 'abhorrent.'
Her statements sparked a fierce backlash. Peter Malinauskas, the Premier of South Australia, linked Dr. Abdel-Fattah to the Bondi atrocity and suggested she was an extremist terrorist sympathiser. Malinauskas had a history of opposing her inclusion, previously stating he did not think it was wise to invite her to the festival.
The Bondi atrocity involved two gunmen who killed 15 people and injured dozens more during a Chanukkah celebration on December 14 at the Sydney beach.
The board's decision to purge Dr. Abdel-Fattah ignited a firestorm, including a boycott by numerous authors. This internal and external pressure forced the cancellation of Adelaide Writers’ Week 2026 and the total resignation of the festival board.
The Adelaide Festival later apologized to Dr. Abdel-Fattah for the handling of her cancellation, but the gesture came too late to save the event. The collapse has left the literary community reeling, raising urgent questions about the silencing of marginalized voices and the future of free speech in Australia.
