The government is continuing its Parental Leave and Pay Review, which will allow an additional 32,000 dads per year to access paternity leave immediately, mirroring the provisions for maternity leave.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that for too long, working people were left without the basic rights and security they deserve.
He claims the reforms will provide these essential protections, ensuring working people have the support they need to balance work and family responsibilities.
Campaigners have raised concerns that a promised 'day-one' right to paternity leave would not include the day-one right to statutory pay, a distinction that remains a point of concern for advocacy groups.
The reforms include the right to take unpaid parental leave from the first day in a new job, a provision that aims to offer immediate flexibility for new parents.
This change is expected to give a further 1.5 million parents more flexibility to share caring responsibilities, fostering a more equitable distribution of childcare duties.
Around 390,000 people are estimated to be out of work due to caring responsibilities but want a job, including parents, a significant group that these reforms seek to address.
The government's review aims to address this gap and provide more support to working parents, creating a more supportive environment for families balancing work and caregiving.
