James Byrne, Simon Allen, and David Harrison have been convicted of the murder of 53-year-old Jackie Rutter, a grandmother of five who was gunned down on her doorstep in a targeted revenge attack.
Prosecutor Nigel Power KC detailed a targeted revenge attack motivated by a dispute over a stolen iPhone 12. The device, allegedly taken by Jackie Rutter’s sons, served as a vital tool for the drug-dealing operations of defendants Byrne and Connolly.
Jackie Rutter was shot dead at her home on Meadowbrook Road in Moreton in October 2022. The killers arrived in a stolen black Vauxhall Insignia, which Simon Allen later torched to destroy evidence.
Barrie Glynn served as the getaway driver, later admitting he 'lost his temper in the car' and questioned his own involvement in the hit. Anna McGinn faces charges for assisting an offender in connection with the fatal shooting.
David Harrison’s residence allegedly functioned as the base of operations on the night of the murder. Simon Allen’s criminal history includes firearm possession offenses dating back to 2003 and 2020.
Following the shooting, Allen claimed Byrne boasted of the killing, stating, 'I've just put two in the chest.' Allen also alleged he was later kidnapped and assaulted by men armed with a machete and an axe who demanded cash.
David Harrison testified that Simon Allen 'often fantasised' about recommissioning firearms to put them back on the street. The trial turned volatile when Harrison reportedly threw water in the dock following threats to have Glynn 'stabbed up' in prison.
Chaos erupted in the courtroom after the verdict as Byrne hurled a water bottle at his co-defendant. Preston Connolly, another key figure in the plot, fled the country for Turkey to evade authorities.
Mr Justice Goose is scheduled to pass sentence on Friday, January 29. The case underscores the brutal complexities of gang-related violence and the lethal consequences of petty disputes.
The Moreton community remains in the wake of the violence, left to rebuild after a shooting that shattered the local peace. This killing follows a broader pattern of escalating regional violence that continues to challenge law enforcement.
As the sentencing date approaches, the victim’s family and the wider community await the final judicial response to the October 2022 tragedy.
