Michael Marra has officially announced his candidacy for the Scottish Labour leadership, setting the stage for a contest focused on the party's future direction.
Marra asserted the party must fundamentally change after successive electoral defeats. He possesses the "skills, the experience and the character" essential for leading the party on the "road to recovery."
He framed the upcoming contest as a "moment of renewal" for Scottish Labour, a critical pivot for its future trajectory.
Nominations for the leadership will officially open for a two-week period, commencing Monday, August 3. Party members and supporters will then cast ballots from August 28 through September 17 to determine the next leader.
Marra articulated a clear vision for the party's future, stating, "The promise of our Scottish Labour Party is that we build a better, more equal nation, and we leave it as a legacy for our children."
The promise of our Scottish Labour Party is that we build a better, more equal nation, and we leave it as a legacy for our children.
He continued, "That is a moral purpose. But too often it can become clouded in the day to day of our politics."
Marra emphasized, "In this moment of renewal for our party, we must restate that purpose. But we also have to listen. We have to learn. And we have to change."
This push for change extends beyond a single electoral setback. Marra noted, "This is not a question of reacting to one bad defeat. Scottish Labour has gone backwards six Holyrood elections in a row."
Marra underscored his personal commitment to this transformation, stating, "That better, more equal Scotland is my driving ambition."
He added, "It’s what gets me up in the morning. It’s what motivates me to stand up for the people I grew up with here in Dundee."
Marra concluded, "It’s what drives me as I campaign for change across Scotland. It’s why I’m standing to be the leader of the Scottish Labour Party."
Meanwhile, Jackie Baillie, the acting Scottish Labour leader, confirmed the agreed timetable for the election. She acknowledged Sarwar's contributions.
Baillie stated, "I want to thank Anas Sarwar for his leadership and friendship. He led the Scottish Labour Party with integrity and a vision to build a fairer and more equal Scotland."
She further detailed the procedural aspects of the contest: "The Scottish Executive Committee have tonight agreed a timetable for the election of the next leader of the Scottish Labour Party."
Baillie affirmed, "The agreed process guarantees a fair and open contest, while ensuring we are able to progress at pace and elect a new leader without delay."
This process, Baillie concluded, will allow the party to "continue to build on the hard work of recent years and take Scottish Labour forward, ready to hold the SNP to account and confront the poisonous politics of Reform in Scotland."
