Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez underwent an operation after sustaining an injury during the Premier League match against Everton.
Martinez sustained a suspected fractured jaw as Pedro Neto scored both goals for Chelsea. Medical staff confirmed the severity of the injury immediately.
The former Aston Villa star faces an absence of around 40 days. An operation is believed necessary to address the jaw injury.
Martinez's signing had previously pushed Penders further from the starting XI. This development, however, promotes Penders earlier than anticipated, despite manager Alonso's stated preference for an experienced goalkeeper.
Robert Sanchez, another Chelsea goalkeeper, was loaned to Como following mistakes in the club's opening game.
