Eugeniu Neamtu received a life sentence for the fatal stabbing of his flatmate, Gheorghe Trica.
Neamtu was found guilty of the killing, which occurred after Mr Trica demanded repayment of £5, stating, "Give me back those £5." A bystander reportedly exclaimed, "Oh my God, he has cut Trica."
Neamtu traveled to the UK as a visitor in September 2023, failing to declare a previous conviction or his intention to work. The court claims Neamtu was an illegal immigrant at the time of the killing, asserting he was not in the country lawfully.
Prosecutors claim the murder in London was "strikingly similar" to a murder Neamtu committed in Romania in 2006. The court claims Neamtu's murder of Gheorghe Trica occurred in almost identical circumstances to that earlier killing.
The fact you killed another person within three years of your release underlines how dangerous an individual you are.
Judge Richard Marks KC stated, "The fact you killed another person within three years of your release underlines how dangerous an individual you are." Neamtu claims Mr Trica had threatened to kill him, pushed him down the stairs, and made throat-slitting gestures.
He further claims he picked up a knife from the kitchen to “scare” Mr Trica and stabbed him in the chest to protect himself. Regarding the Romanian incident, Neamtu reportedly told authorities that he and a Mr Vas had argued, insulted each other, and fought with objects to hand.
He stated it was possible he struck Mr Vas with a knife in self-defense. In later accounts, he claimed he picked up a knife because he was afraid and that Mr Vas had provoked him.
Following the conviction, Neamtu stated, "There was an incident here and a person is injured. There was an altercation, a man was cut, and I am the perpetrator."
A Home Office spokesperson confirmed, "Our thoughts are with the victim of this horrific crime and with all those who have been affected by it." The spokesperson added, "The perpetrator has now been rightly convicted and justice has been delivered by the courts."
The spokesperson further stated, "Once sentencing has taken place, we will seek to deport him off British soil."
