Glacier Collapse Triggers Deadly Nepal Floods
Devastation in Himalayan villages follows seismic event initially mistaken for earthquake, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing.

Flash floods ravaged Nepalese villages on Wednesday, August 26, causing widespread destruction.
Satellite imagery confirmed a substantial glacier section broke away at approximately 5,200 meters altitude, plummeting roughly 1,200 meters. This colossal ice and rock avalanche then slammed into Tibet's Lhende River, creating a temporary dam.
The river, once blocked, unleashed a powerful flood downstream. Water levels in affected rivers surged by as much as 9 meters in just 30 minutes, with Ruth Gamble describing the flood's behavior as 'like an inland tsunami'.
Such communications and preparations can save lives and reduce the impact at scale.
Tibetan officials reported three deaths and 558 individuals missing. Hundreds of foreign tourists are also feared dead along the border between Nepal and the Tibet region.
Satellite imagery documented widespread destruction, showing houses, roads, and power projects obliterated. The flood reportedly destroyed homes, swamped roads, and swept away bridges.
Rescuers deployed helicopters on Thursday, searching for survivors and delivering critical emergency supplies. At least 19 bridges and approximately 40km of roads have been destroyed across Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.
Damaged hydropower infrastructure has left some areas without electricity. The disruption impacts about 10% of Nepal’s power production, concentrated within the affected valley.
Adrian McCallum asserted the disaster bore the hallmarks of a glacial lake outburst flood. Glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region lost ice 65% faster between 2011 and 2020 compared to the preceding decade.
The last decade marked the hottest multi-year period globally since records began, with 2024 registering as the warmest year ever recorded. Nepal has experienced at least 45 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) events across 39 lakes in recent years.
