Federal agents searched a Beverly Hills home on Tuesday.
The search of Stephen Cloobeck's home directly connects to the broader inquiry into Swalwell. Then-US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed Swalwell from the intelligence committee in 2023 due to his contact with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese spy.
Fang reportedly contacted Swalwell's campaign in 2012. She participated in fundraising for his 2014 campaign, drawing scrutiny from federal authorities.
A House ethics committee investigation into Swalwell's contact with Fang, opened in 2021, closed two years later without action. Los Angeles prosecutors now weigh charges against Swalwell.
People familiar with the investigation claim Swalwell spent time at Cloobeck's Beverly Hills home before resigning from office. Cloobeck stated, "I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women. I support women’s rights."

Swalwell has denied criminal wrongdoing. The Department of Justice and the FBI declined to comment, maintaining silence on the active investigation.
Separately, Eric Swalwell resigned from Congress amid a wave of sexual misconduct allegations. A woman came forward, alleging Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice, including when she worked for him.
A former staffer told of Swalwell raping her at a hotel while he was in New York City for a charity gala in 2024. Three other women also alleged various kinds of sexual misconduct by Swalwell, including sending them unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos.
