Early Release Scheme Sparks Outcry Over Grooming Gang Convicts

Approximately 5,000 individuals are set for early release under new sentencing changes.
The Prime Minister has personally intervened; he ensures everything possible is being done so that "vile groomers are dealt with in the way their victims deserve."
Some offending predates 2003 sexual abuse law changes, with perpetrators charged with crimes like indecent assault; this specific charge reportedly does not fall within the scheme's exclusions.
Melvyn Little, for instance, received conviction for abuse occurring before the 2003 legal amendments. Mohammed Imran Akram and Mohammed Naheem, members of a Bradford grooming gang, could also qualify for early release.
Safraz Ahmed Latif and Wajid Hussain may also fall within the scheme's scope. Kevin Pritchard, who abused three girls under 12 between the 1970s and 1990s, represents another potential candidate for early release.
Andrew Fox, found guilty of a series of offenses against two boys dating back to the 1990s and early 2000s, is also a potential candidate. Anthony Roberts, a piano teacher who abused two boys under ten at an East Sussex boarding school between 1965 and 1974, similarly qualifies.
Kemi Badenoch has raised concerns that child sex offenders and other 'serious criminals' could be freed. She states the government's own writing indicates some of these men will be released early anyway, despite assurances that those convicted of grooming offenses would be excluded.

Badenoch further claimed the government's action is "yet another betrayal of the victims." She added that the brave survivors "have been put through hell by this process and deserve so much better."
Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers, convicted of manslaughter in the death of Pc Andrew Harper, could also be eligible for early release. Pc Andrew Harper died in 2019 after being dragged by a car as offenders fled a quad bike theft scene, though Henry Long, the driver in that case, received a 16-year sentence and is not eligible for early release.
Released individuals will face stricter probation conditions, including electronic monitoring and mandatory drug testing. Some prisoners not excluded from the scheme could be freed after serving one-third of their sentence, instead of 40% or 50%.
The prison population in England and Wales stood at 86,495 on August 3rd. This figure represents 97% of usable capacity.
